Makita is a top-notch brand of power tools. Amongst an eclectic array of tools, the company manufactures an 18-volt cordless hammer drill. The drill has the added function of drilling like a jackhammer does, with precise blows to help with drilling into concrete and masonry. Makita product specifications may change at any time. Drilling Capacities:
The Makita 18 volt drill is able to drill into a variety of surfaces including steel, wood and concrete. For wood, the Makita can drill a hole up to 36 mm, or 1 7/16 inches, deep. It can handle drilling into metal or concrete up to 13 mm (1/2 inch) deep.
Screw Capacities:
In addition to drilling holes, the 18-volt drill has the capacity to drive wood or machine screws into the surfaces that they were designed for. It can drive a wood screw up to 75 mm or 3 inches long into wood. The machine’s 6mm (1/4 inch) screw can be driven into metal or concrete.
Technical Aspects:
The 18-volt cordless drill weighs in at 5.1 lbs with the battery attached. The overall length of the device is 239 mm or 9 3/8 inches.
Revolutions Per Minute (RPM):
The Makita has two speeds at which it operates: high and low. The lower speed does not operate on as many RPMs but its power is concentrated. At the high speed, the drill’s RPMs are 1200 per minute. At the lower speed, it clocks in at 350 RPMs.
Blows Per Minute (BPM):
The hammer function of this drill enables it to drill into concrete surfaces by adding a jackhammer, or hammering function, to its drilling. The BPM is counted separately from the traditional RPM count and varies between the high and low function of the drill. While in the high function mode, the BPM rate is 18,000 and the low function is 5,250.
Makita tools with an 18-volt battery pack may include lithium-ion batteries inside. This battery pack contains 12 batteries, 1.5 volts each, wired together to create 18 volts of power. When you are working on a project and your drill begins to turn slowly and not penetrate wood or drive a screw, the battery pack most likely needs charging. Using a Makita fast charger will only take 15 minutes to recharge the battery pack fully.
How to Revive a Makita 18V Lithium-Ion Battery
Hold the trigger down on the Makita tool until the Makita 18V battery is entirely discharged.
Grasp the battery pack on the bottom of the Makita tool. Press inward on the tabs on each side and pull the battery pack out of the tool.
Plug an 18-volt battery charger into an electrical receptacle.
Insert the battery into the charger as far as it will go. A red light will illuminate and a buzzer or melody will play briefly when the battery is in position.
Remove the battery by pulling it upward and out of the charger when the light turns green or a buzzer or melody sounds that the battery is fully charged.
Unplug the battery charger.
If the battery is not removed from the Makita fast charger when it is fully charged, the charger will automatically trickle charge an 18-volt battery for 24 hours. The quick charger automatically sets itself to apply a small charge to the battery at intervals to keep it at full capacity until it is removed without overcharging it.
Discharging a battery entirely allows the charger to charge the battery fully each time without any residual electricity stored in the battery.
The batteries can be stored when not installed in an appliance, for a period of time without irreparable harm.
How to Store Makita 18V Lithium Ion Batteries?
Using a battery charger that is meant for lithium ion batteries, charge your batteries. Lithium ion batteries should be charged at least at 40 percent to avoid future charging problems. If you battery is completely without a charge, you will need to charge it for about half an hour to get to 40 percent.
Find a cool, dry place to store your lithium ion batteries. Avoid storing your batteries in the basement, bathroom or other areas of your house that are or may become wet. Ideal temperature ranges for storage are between 0 and 60 degrees F.
Refrigerate your batteries if you do not have any other place to keep them that is temperature-controlled. Remember to use the fridge part only and not the freezer, which can become too cold.
Avoid placing your batteries in a drawer that is in direct sunlight for any part of the day. Lithium ion batteries may explode if they are exposed to extreme heat or light.
Take out your batteries and partially charge them or use them in an electronic device, however briefly, every few months. This will revive the charge and prolong the battery’s life. A lithium battery slowly loses its charge even when it is stored.
