Minor repairs to drywall
Fixing small holes
Depending on the size of the hole. Hole smaller than the size of a dime can be filled with drywall compound using a wide scraper. Nail holes should be gently taped with a hammer before filling to make a small shallow dent and this will put the paper edges below the surface. To repair a nail hole use the same method, put a small dent in the drywall to recess the rough edges of the paper before filling. Nail holes can usually be filled in one pass. Then you can sand the repair area smooth.
Larger holes usually require some backing in the hole before you can begin the patch. This could be one or more small pieces of wood slipped into the hole and then glued to the backside of the wall surface using construction adhesive or you could screw it in place, which is the way I do it. With the backing in place you can proceed to fill the hole with a piece of drywall. Home Depot sells pieces 2′x2′. Then tape and fill the cracks around the patch with drywall compound. Larger holes may take several layers (allow each to dry before adding more) to fill the hole. Then you can sand the repair area smooth. Sounds a lot more complex than it really is.
Note: if you are in a hurry to finish use joint compound (durabond 90) instead of drywall compound, it is harder to sand but sets up quicker.
Fixing drywall nail pops
Nail pops occur when lumber shrinks and exposes the shank of a nail or screw, or when the sheet of drywall is not firm against the stud. Pressure on the loose drywall panel causes the head of the fastener to pop through.
To repair this problem, put a drywall screw about 1 1/2 inches above or below the pop on the same stud. Hold the drywall firmly against the framing as you set the screw. Next, remove the popped fastener. Repair the holes as explained in Fixing small holes
Improper fastener length can also contribute to the problem. When installing drywall, make sure the screws penetrate the stud by at least 5/8 inch. Don’t set the fastener too deep; tearing the paper surface also reduces the holding power of the fastener.
If you don’t have access to a drywall gun you can buy a #2 drywall dimpler at your hardware store that attaches to an electric drill. It works fine and costs very little. It can save you a lot of time repairing spots where you drove a screw in to far breaking the paper.
